Beyond Civilization

Recent Reader of Daniel Quinn's books

|

I just recently read Ishmael, the Story of B, My Ishmael, and Beyond Civilization all one right after the other. I come from an anarchist background and yet I was still fascinated by what was being said in these books and made me really think about life. I am now reading the Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins to get a better understanding of evolution and genetics. I think humanity forgets that it is a part of nature and not a ruler of nature. The laws of nature still apply to us as well as natural selection and evolution.

An open letter to Obama

To others who read this, argue it, agree with it but if you can, repost it somewhere else.  Let's start some dialogues...

To President-Elect Obama:

I'm just one of the millions.

We Won

| | | | | | |

I'm going to start this post by saying I'm a believer in Godesky. I find his posts thoughtful and well-researched. When challenged on things, he will look for more evidence to back up his claims or modify what he's said appropriately. All of this means that when he states that he believes we reached the peak of our civilization around 50-100 years ago, I listen.

Shared Common Vision

|

Quinn talks a lot about our needing to create communities with a "shared common vision." This is what will separate our cultural revolution from the failed one of the '60s. I know what he means by this, but am having trouble putting everything into one sentence, one thesis.

Why I think violence against civ won't work

| | |

Talvir from an old Ishcon post.

I think violence will fail against civ because there are groups and individuals that will block any attempts for it to work.

Rather than go through a long-winded explanation, I'll just give an example.

Thermcon

Quote:

THERMCON was the code name of a FBI operation which was launched in response to the sabotage of the Arizona Snowbowl ski lift near Flagstaff, Arizona in October 1987 by three people from Prescott, Arizona, Mark Davis, Margaret Millet, and Marc Baker. In a November, 1987 letter claiming responsibility, the group called themselves the "Evan Mecham Eco-Terrorist International Conspiracy" (EMETIC). The group named themselves after Evan Mecham, a former Arizona governor. The Arizona Snowbowl spent $50,000 repairing the damage.

Abandoned towns - Rory

prometheus235 Wed Jul 12, 2006

After listening to the new Anthropik Podcast with Greer last night, something he said sent off lightbulbs in my head.

At one point, when Jason and Guili asked how far we are into catabolic collapse, Greer replied that we are definitely in it, and pointed the wholesale abandonment of midwestern towns as part of the proof.
All arguements about collapse and if we are in it aside, these abandoned towns exist. I did a bit of research and found out it is true.

Now, in the Best place to Escape thread, Truly posited North Central Illinois as a good place to "run" too.

Tony's philosophy of Leaving Civilization

| | | |

tonyz Sun Mar 19, 2006

I actually advocate an integrated approach to Leaving Civilization.

First of all, I STRONGLY recommend "remedial education" This is the education about the natural world that your parents didn't have to pass onto you, and the education you certainly did not receive in civsymatic education.

You may have even been in boy scouts and not have received this educaiton. I was lucky enough to be initiated

Why did I bold intiate?

Because it means something to have older men bring you into the ancient and now-secret knowledges of our forefathers. This intiation, this stealing of the key out from under your mother's pillow, is imperative to the development of a man (sorry, ladies, I have no idea what it takes to initiate a woman, but you probably don't want to be told what that is by a man, do you? So I'll leave that subject to you).
