Thread for Technical Requests
I noticed there were a few scattered suggestions on ideas for modules, and a few scattered offers of help, so I thought I'd bring the conversation all in one place.
I saw requests for:
# Chat Module
# Private Messaging
# Mods and moderator philosophy
# Subtopics in forums
# Bloggers
# hosting of special interest sites, wikis, etc.
And may of offer from people to help with these projects, maybe there is a way to get multiple people working on it?
TonyZ

I can put in these
I can put in these anytime:
# Chat Module
# Private Messaging
Please give me examples of these?
# Subtopics in forums
The following can be done in many ways, including having the community self-moderate by voting up or down
# Mods and moderator philosophy
What is needed for these?
# Bloggers
# hosting of special interest sites, wikis, etc.

There's a demo link to try the functionality.

So you tried the demo off
So you tried the demo off the link I posted? It's a more HTML based listing rather than an IRC connection. I would personally prefer it if people used IRC software and we registered a real room, like #ishcon was.  Is it realistic to expect people to be able to do this? Maybe putting up links and tutorials?

I like this solution more, personally. I can collect up some tutorials and help documents into a centralized place for the various platforms if people need help. --William

We should have a couple of blogs starting real soon now (put your nominations/votes in TODAY!). We also have avatars and search.

You guys are amazing
I'm just blown away by how rapidly things got put together, and how nice it all fits and how radiantly beautiful it looks.
If I wasn't married and straight I'd be all over you guys!
Love out to William and Gerard, you sexy beasts you! (if I'm missing anyone, let me know!)

I'm taking a break and then I will look back at it and re-add the proper basic shortcuts.Â

I added BBCode for use on the site.
Same old BBcode as before.
By the way, I do Drupal for a living. I think it's very dangerous to think that everyone can just jump in and start coding/adding modules with no experience. Once the bus is rolling, you just don't say "Hey Kids! Let's go make modifications to the engine with our handy-dandy snack-pack ustensils".
That being said, I'd be willing to help, and/or train when possible, those who are technically-minded and interested.

Good point Gerard

Notice of new
I've got to learn how to title posts ;^)
Is there any way to see if there are new posts in a forum (not threads) from the forum listing page?
Peace and Love and Empathy,
Matt

New features added
So I added a few new features...
Private Messaging. You now all have an inbox, and at the bottom of every post is a link to private_msg a person directly.
pathAuto. This will replace urls like node/5 with meaningful titles. By default it will use the titles given to posts. Search Engines love this, and IshThink.org is all about being found, so I thought it would be good to implement it now.
New Forum Topics. Added a block on the right to show new forum topics and not threads only.
Text Editor. Fixed the text editor so that it will now show for everyone. I think this will make most people happy. If you don;t like it, there's an option below the text box to turn it off <<Disable Rich text>>.
BBcode. Like at Ishcon. Use bbcode if you prefer it.
Please let me know if you notice bugs and/or glitches.. Drupal is great but not perfect, that's why humans were built, to fix the code

wow, G! this is so cool!

New Comments
Is there a way that new comments, rather than new topics, can be marked at the forum level?

Where would you see this?
Where would you see this? New comments are already showing up in the top right.
Oh you mean in the Forums top page?

Yeah, on the forums page it
Yeah, on the forums page it only marks a forum as new if it has a new topic. I have to click through all forums to check for new posts. The recent comments block works most the time, but it's easy to miss posts if you're away from the site or not watching closely.

I'll put some thinking into
I'll put some thinking into it.
I think it could get pretty messy with the layout though.
Drupal is meant to be a Swiss Army type of thing. Forums in it are not meant to be the BEST forums, as a dedicated forums software will always be better for that.
Still, I'll see what can be done

How do we adjust the indentation of threads? (joe says it's the button "right under there" - but he's probably got mod privilages)
Can "recent comments" include the topic/thread title or something that identifies it?
Is there a way to corral or make a feature like "posts since your last visit", all on one page?

- How do we adjust the indentation of threads? (joe says it's the button "right under there" - but he's probably got mod privilages)
The options to set the viewing at the moment are available in the drop down boxes at the top.
- Can "recent comments" include the topic/thread title or something that identifies it?
Possibly, but this would be part of theming the site and would require more time than I can put in right now. At this point, we should be formalizing the structure, and what features are needed. At that point I could look into building a look that most people could love. I'm sure that we have creatives here enough to define a nice look.
- Is there a way to corral or make a feature like "posts since your last visit", all on one page?
There's always a way, but it will require some time to define, and then code. At the moment, I think that I'm the only one with the ability to do this. Drupal has a steep learning curve when it comes time to modify the innards. Well worth it though. There are already modules that could notify you every day in an email every new posts.
----
- 2 years at IC and I never even tried it; One week at IT and I'm ready for the "ignore button"...
There is a better forum module than this one, but it's a bit late now to switch as it it not meant to absorb what we already have written. Once the bus is a'rolling..
But it's our bus, we'll work it out, with patience. =)

Posts Since Last Visit
When we were blogging using Drupal, there was a (I think) default page available that was called "Recent Posts" and "/tracker" in the URL. It did not work perfectly, but it was just a journal of all posts, all types by date and included total comments and comments since last visit...
Is that module still available in Drupal and doea anyone know what I am talking about?
One Edit:Â Nevermind, I see it is there now!
Janene

If you click "More >>" at
If you click "More >>" at the bottom of the "Recent Comments" block on teh bottom right, you might like that better..
I'm ready to switch that block for the old "Recent Comments" block on teh top right, think I should? Â
Please try the new feature
Please try the new feature in teh menu on the left called indexpage and give me feedback.Â
What's needed is Tags I believe. It would allow classification of the content, and then I can programatically act on it and show it whichever way we want. Now, Free tagging? Or we add tags as requested?
Can "recent comments"
- Can "recent comments" include the topic/thread title or something that identifies it?
Look at the bottom left block, I think it's what you want? I also think it would be better this way, so if people prefer it like this, we can switch to it, instead of the way it shows on the top right.
I will eventually make it look nicer, make the Title Bold and the Comment in italics maybe?
Feedback?
Oops, how bold of me
Soo am i done gettin bolded?
Sory, I thought it'd be clearer

Tiny type
The info listed just below a post, example: "Submitted by Ludi on Sat, 2007-01-20 16:50" was too big, but now too small to read (sayeth goldilocks).
Likewise with the red "new" flags.

You can adjust the text size in your own browsers
I didn't change anything as far as I know.. Â
When did it change?
You can always change teh font size from within your browsers too, usually works by pressing CTRL+ and CTRL- as well. Â
Hope that helps?

Probably on my end
Yesterday, I think? I know how to change browser font sizes (which ups or downs ALL displayed fonts) - but I thought the proportions of the text I mentioned changed relative to other text in-page, somehow...
-----
I noticed that the comments & PM editor will highlight spell errors (when RT is not enabled) but doesn't spell check when RT is enabled.
Is the RT editor available for the PMs?

Got the font thing sorted
I found it - set a higher limit on the minimum font size in my browser.

Would more detailed profiles
Would more detailed profiles be possible at some point? I dunno, maybe some basic info (if people want to share) and room for a little bio....maybe recent posts? Â Â

Okay my bold, italics, underlining are not working. They work in the little box I type in to post a comment, but then in the actual comment, when posted, they are no longer there. Also, it erases the spaces I put between paragraphs, and makes all my posts one giant paragraph. I see that other people can do all these things, so I don't understand what is going on with my account. Help!
Also, is there a way we can click to quote people's comments like we could on IshCon?

For people using Safari on a MAC
The editor I added is the best one for this type of work, BUT, sadly it doesn't work 100% for us on MACs.
I recommend you either turn the editor OFF and use BBCode, or better, get Firefox at http://getfirefox.com for your browsing, it's the best browser out there.
There may be conflicts with other filters at time, so if you encounter weird glitches, please mesage me and I'll see if anything can be done..

The previous post tracker is now better
I've switched to a better tracker of previous posts. Just pick "recent posts" in the top menu on the left side bar.

It says at the top of the page already, but you'd liek to see it in each box?

Anything is possible, given time

So ya know that block up at
So ya know that block up at the top that reads:
<Username>
* blogs
> content
* forums
> index page
[etc]
Shouldn't the entries with arrows (>content) that expand be able to expand without loading another page?
i.e. in the CSS you have "leaf-expanded" and "leaf-collapsed" styles, one that displays and one that doesn't display, and when you click on > content, it just switches styles on its own.
The links one could be expandable too. I suppose the recent posts and my inbox could as well, but that would be at least a little more complicated.
-Mike
(obviously this isn't all that important and is a bit nitpicky...)Â

In Drupal, any menu link
In Drupal, any menu link will always need to have a page attached to it.
The present theme, while quite useable for now, is the default theme that comes with Drupal version 4.7. At this point, I see no motivation to spend any energy working on a theme, until the somewhat formal layout and set of features are decided.

Ah, so how many of these
Ah, so how many of these things are a matter of theme?

It's a content management
It's a content management system (CMS) so there's a total separation of content (Our submissions), Container (The structure, modules used) and the look (theme or skin if you'd prefer). Â
I'll be in the #ishcon room for a little bit if you'd like to talk shop

I had the same problem
I had the same problem trying to use the chat applet at school myself because of the firewalls.
I have a small request. Can we have a page index tab for the forums be above the thread as well? going back to a thread and scrolling down to the bottom is a pain, or am I just a wuss?

Blog Organization
Is there a way that, when we click on "blogs" in the left-hand menu, there can be a pull-down list of the different people who have active blogs?
Care,
Aaron

To add to the technical
To add to the technical requests galore (Gerard you are the man)- I was wondering if there is any way that threads with new posts in a forum get bumped up to the top of the list. Right now there might be a new post in thread x, but it is way down the list...I think in order of when the thread was created. That way active threads are kept near the top- and if someone adds a new comment to an old thread it's not lost since nobody looks that far back anymore....does that make sense? Â

So then, for you, simply select "New Items First" and that should give you the threads the way "you" want.. :) Make sure to save your preference. If I got what you mean.

I'm noticing...
From the "recent posts page" - i see threads listed with a "new" flag. Click the "new", go to the new post. Cool. All mostly works well, 'cept for a few intermittent threads. I think the common denominator is threads over 1 page in length (and perhaps the "new" post is on page 2) Anyway, it bombs and just sends me to the thread opener. Then, of course, "backing up" to the previous page to find the "new" post again, but the flag is has been reset..
Also from this page, can you list the most recent post author, and link to their post - instead of just a list of the thread opener authors and the occasional "new" flag...
Similar thing happens from the "recent comments sidebar" - if the thread is over 2 pages, clicking the comment link dosen't take you to the comment, but to the thread opener.
-----
When checking on my older posts from "my account/tracking" tab - is there anyway to list/link to the actual post, instead of just taking me to the thread opener? I think this detail applies to other lists throughout the site - I'd like to be able to list & navigate straight to specific post, not just the thread opener details...

Hi,
I noticed too about the issue when the list of comments is split over a next page. Remind me if I forget about this requst here, though I probably won't, as it irritates me too.
for now, you can set it to show 300 comments per page, at teh top of any forum page. Save those settings, then all comments will stay on one page. Â
And if one post gets more than 300 comments, then we ban the original poster hehehe Yes I'm kidding.

Groups
I would love to see some way of doing Groups. I have heard there are things called Organic Groups in Drupal and think that'd be what I'm looking for. I'm hoping to get a group started in the next week and am debating between going the Google route if I can't do it through IshThink. But I would love to have it here since this is where the people that the group is for are.

_____________________________________________________
"The sparrow hops along the veranda, with wet feet."

One concern
The concern I have is that if all users have the ability to delete their posts, that entire threads can end up becoming senseless when an early post is deleted.
Also, I think if you delete a top post, that any connected posts are deleted as well (that's what it says when I delete a post as an Admin, anyways). There's probably a workaround for that, though.

MEETING HOUSTON
Any way we can tweak the influence of repeat calender events from bloating the "tag cloud"? Like one "point" per topic, or whatever is appropriate for the count...
-Jim
Have a look at the Tag cloud
Have a look at the Tag cloud box now and let me know what you think. I'll investigate the suggestion of keeping events to a single count, or maybe even remove them from the mix?
nomad411

Better
I like the expanded selection of tags, but it might be a bit too much, now. And it doesn't fully neutralize Houston Meeting prominence...
Oh, never mind me, I'm probably over thinking it. I just don't want to give the impression that this is a Houston-only based dealio... (no disrespect for Amanda and her efforts, of course!)

Double Vision
Every utube vid posted is doubled up, one directly atop another as displayed on my screen. What's goin' on?
-Jim
When posting a Youtube video
When posting a youtube video, all you have to put is the link itself, as given by youtube. No need to create a hyperlink with it. Simply paste the "http://hkasdkasjdkajd"  as given.
If whichever browser you're using is giving you issues when creating the content, then simply click on "disable rich-text" below the edit box before pasting. Drupal is pretty good at following the standards for code, Internet Explorer and some others, Not at all. That's what usually causes the problems. Same with Safari for us Mac users. Â
Everyone should use Firefox for their browser, no matter which system you're on, it's the best.
I hope this resolves the issue..
nomad411

I'm browsing with FF

Oh, nevermind - I don't watch the tube, anyhoo...

I meant the posters Jim,
I meant the posters Jim, sorry for the lack of clarity. When posting, it's much better to use Firefox as it usually is much better at folowing standards, so then the editor application used when writing posts should work better.
It's also very easy to post without that extra editor though, it does sometime cause issues. Maybe I should remove it
We already doubled the number of visits and page requests since a few days ago's average. I'm anxious to see if we'll have a sudden influx of new readers soon. Our site is mentioned on the wikipedia entry under Daniel Quinn's Ishmael and Story of B.
The one thing saving us is that no one ever votes on blog content to be pushed to the front page, so search engines will abandon us soon enough anyway since our front page barely ever changes.
Cheers

Seems that in the last week or so, the character  (capital A with a carrot on top) has infected many posts, and I've seen it appear in older post that never had it before....
Any clue what changed? How to fix?
-Jim

Hmm... Nope
I'll look into it. Which I can actually do now that school is over (WHOO! Party at my place
)

Removed ability to use tables
I've removed the table, tr, and td tags from the allowable html tags filter. Improperly used tables really messed up the flow of the page. If anyone really wants to use tables, please yell at me.

Donations
So, here I was wanting to make a donation to this site - cause I noticed in my profile there was a place for something 'like' it - but, lo-and-behold, I found nothing. Surely there's a way to link that up to the front page or in the link's bar in the upper right?
-Aaron

Of course, but...
I'd have to get that set up with Laura, because she is currently paying out of pocket for us. We should probably set up a donation bucket, and probably some other stuff as well, but someone else will have to coordinate it, because I have more than enough to do otherwise.
I've also been meaning to give the site a make-over, but I guess that will have to wait, too.

By all means, if you know
By all means, if you know how to get something done, drop me an email (
