The Jung Center, Houston presents:

The Culture of Make Believe
featuring a conference call with  author and activist
Derrick Jensen

Thursdays, 7:30 - 9 pm
Jun 5 - Jul 10
$70 ($60 Jung Center members)
Limit: 15 In this class we will discuss the critical issues of our age - the shadows of consumption and exploitation undergirding modern industrial civilization.  Derrick Jensen's enlightening tour-de-force, The Culture of Make Believe, examines the cultural and psychological roots of racism, slavery, colonialism, the indigenous holocaust, and modernity's compulsion for environmental destruction.  His writing is said to break your heart, then heal it.  His page-turning prose, provocative arguments, and compassionate solutions for an ecopsychology of sustainable living will drive our discussion and thinking.  In the final week, we will have a conference call with the author to pose our questions, comments, and concern for the future.

Tour Description: On October 6, 2007 Houstonians will have the chance to see first hand the beginnings of a transformation in our society - the transition to a sustainable energy future! Come tour real solar homes and buildings in the Houston area and learn more about all forms of renewable energy. Houston has long been an energy leader but the fossil fuel era must give way to cleaner, inexhaustible, local forms of energy. Tour organizers want to show how Houston can remain an energy leader in the 21st century by showcasing pioneering efforts to incorporate solar and other forms of renewable energy into our homes and everyday lives.

Etc/GMT-5

PM me for address and directions.

Monthly "Floating" Meeting and Activity:
Fireworks, Homeless Documentary Viewing and Potluck Dinner
Friday, June 1
Time: 7PM til ?
Place: Amanda's waterfront home in Seabrook, Texas

Come on down to beautiful Seabrook (between Houston and Galveston)
for a fun AND educational night!  Arrive any time after 7PM for a
potluck dinner and drinks. (Please bring a food or drink item to
share.)  At 8PM, we will watch the locally produced
documentary, "Beneath the Bridges", about the homeless in Houston
(or as Quinn calls them, The Tribe of Crow).  This documentary was
shot and directed by a DJ at radio station KRBE who was curious
about the homeless people he saw every day on his way to work in
Downtown Houston. There are interviews with homeless people,
homeless shelter employees, and community activists.  For more info,
go to www.beneaththebridges.com/  . The film is an hour and 17
minutes long.

At 9:30PM, we will head outside on the deck or in the yard/street
and watch the fireworks show that takes place at Kemah Boardwalk
across the river.  This is a really nice fireworks display that they
have on Fridays in June and July. It lasts about 20 minutes.
www.kemahboardwalk.com

Non-Ish family and friends are welcome! However, if you plan to
bring small children, please warn me ahead of time so I can do some
childproofing.
I suggest that group members carpool if possible. It's fun and it's
good for the environment!

Stuff you should know:
* There is a dog and 2 cats on the premises, so if you are allergic,
bring your meds.
*House is up 1 flight of stairs with no handicapped access.
*No smoking inside, please. You can smoke on the deck, in the yard
or in the driveway.
