Just starting out

Hello!
I'm Kendra and I'm just starting out on the journey. I have read "Ishmael" and just finished "Story of B".
After reading "Ishmael" I thought it was a great book but I wasn’t much changed. "Story of B" however BLEW ME AWAY. After reading the words "You are B" something clicked in side me and I actually felt physically different. I was in a daze for the first 2 or 3 days afterwards having trouble paying attention to anything outside of my mind. That’s wearing off but now I'm having trouble getting back to my everyday life. I think of everything in such a different way.

So here I am attempting to reach out to other people who have felt this change too so I can talk with them and sort out all these new thoughts.
Just about everyone I have come in contact with since has gotten a book recommendation. I have been scouring used book stores for copies of any of his work to read or pass on to others.

A little more info:
I'm 24, living in Berkeley, CA. I own a small Vintage & Indie design clothing boutique called Brownies Vintage http://brownies-vintage.com

I look forward to sharing ideas with all of you.

UPDATE: I have now read "Ishmael", "Story of B", "My Ishmael", "Beyond Civilization", & am currently reading "Providence..."
I feel like I have a good basic grasp of DQ's ideas and am excited to explore my options with this new way of thinking.

Welcome, Kendra!

Sorry for the delay in responding. Hope you like it here!

hello

Hey, welcome to the rabbit hole, so to speak. Saw your post on the "New Folk and Lurkers" in the midst of all this conflict and ridiculousness and thought it'd be nice to be friendly. I remember my "oh shit" moment -- Quinn didn't really do it for me so much as my friend Mike and subsequently IshCon and the endless hours discussing the meaning of civilization, collapse, and all kinds of worldview-changing stuff. Sucks that you weren't here in the "glory days", because I think most of us have moved on a bit from DQ's ideas.

I oughta link you to my own introduction from a few years ago, haha. brb finding link... oh man three years ago: link.

Glory Days and Beyond Civ.

Adam,

You wrote: "I think the "Glory Days" are yet to come."

Me too. Yesterday I was just telling the editor of our local newspaper about how some of the solutions to the Peak Oil crisis can be found in DQ's Beyond Civilization, especially concerning the tribal buisness model.

Take care,

Curt

 Thanks for posting that

Thanks for posting that link. I know it's been a while but I only just now saw it. There is a lot there so it might take me a while. Is this where you had your "oh shit" moment or just your introduction. I'd be interested in seeing the threads that caused some sparks for you.

ishcon threads

That was just my introduction from several years ago, when I was still very green. I'm not sure I could actually link you to an "oh shit" moment thread where we all had a big epiphany, since we were all continually changing throughout the conversations and gatherings. That's why I said it's a bit unfortunate you weren't around while it was happening, since it's just one of those things you have to experience.

That said, there were more than a few spark-y threads. Most of these were centered around people familiarizing themselves with a way of thinking about the world and asserting their own perspective on that subject. I'd love to be able to share this process with more people, but I can't really justify linking you (or anyone else) to 40 page threads where nothing gets understood or agreed upon until three or four related just-as-lengthy threads later. I'd suggest just putting key words and phrases that interest you into the search box and seeing what comes up.

Sustainability, permaculture, civilization, Mother Culture, unschooling, attachment parenting, Derrick Jensen, violence, walking away, tribes, tribalism, community, ... will all undoubtedly turn up interesting results. Stuff from 2006/2007 will probably be more current and relevant, and will include more of the same people from here, but some of the other threads are interesting for a historical perspective.

Oh, on edit another way to do it is look for conversations involving people you like, since that's pretty much how I always browsed ishcon.

This one was interesting,

This one was interesting, one of the last good discussions before the plug was pulled on IshCon: http://forum-archive.ishcon.org/f/19/3644.html

Actually, I'm pretty sure that's the last real in-depth discussion I/we took part in on those topics... hm.

New People

See?  This is great, there has been more activity in the last two weeks here than I have seen from these boards in the last two months.  New people for the win!

Hey, I'm brand new to IshThink and I actually came across IshCon first and that is exactly what I did. It helped me a lot.  I know you originally posted this a while ago, but I really feel like I can identify with your situation.
