#ishthink channel now created, just next door to #ishcon

If you look in the menu above, in the blue "header" zone, you should see a new link called Chat. I dare you to click it..

More freer?
regarding the chat page discussing software to use... (BTW, why announce this where we can't reply/discus, but only pm the author...?)
XChat is a free 30day trial, but then $20 to reg after trial is over.
Without getting into the install/uninstall/re-install game (if even possible) - is there anything more "permanently free" out there for the dreaded XP?

Java chat
Hey Jim,
What wrong with the Java chat client, which Gerard included a link for?
I just tried it out, it works nicely.
And I think it's better not to have the "Chat page" full of comments. This thread is a much cleaner way to provide an opportunity for comment. Perhaps Gerard could put a link to this thread in the "Chat page."Â

Uh huh
Because there was previous talk of going without a built-in client. I checked it out - it's pretty slick (but I can't figure out how to re-size the window, and a few other tweaks).
Sry about the "page" confusion - and i know we're not in the fluff & pretty phase yet - but everything appears nearly identical and it's somewhat bewildering knowing where's what.

Oops
Hey Jim,
Oh sorry, I misunderstood
I empathize, it does have a similar appearence, I get lost occasionally too.
I think/hope it is mostly a matter of getting used to it a bit.

You might try mIRC
I used mIRC for a while, and it was pretty nice.

mIRC is great software, and
mIRC is great software, and well worth paying for it.

Open The Safe software
Thanks folks - though I haven't met ANY software worth paying for. (I still run 100% bootleg MS...)
So until this machine is spent or in need of a complete brain flash - I remain interested in possibilities/opportunities to increment toward open source wares. I was thinking this chat thing might one, and hoping for some soft savvy bomb-da-bling tiparoos.
(I love it when techweeny purists grind on MotherSoftware - like they have no hypocrisies in their lives...)

mIRC
Hey --
We downloaded and tried out ,IRC a couple weeks ago... http://www.mirc.com/
Seemed to wokr okay, but haven't used it much...Â

It's not commentable because
It's not commentable because it's a permanent page to get to the chat from.Â
As for free on Windows, I have no idea. mirc does not time out I believe, but I have stopped using Windows years ago so I'm kinda out of touch. I was glad to see xchat there, I use it on linux and OS X and it is free, I didn't realize that they charged on the Windows side.
The Java chat I spent the morning testing and setting up works very well. I will code up something so that it automaticaly picks up your userId from the site at some point, but if you try it you'll see it's pretty damn easy and ful of options, *IF* needed. :) Â

We might try scheduled chats again. I find communication a little easier in chat than in threads.
