About Ishthink

Ishthink is a community of people who have been inspired by Ishmael by Daniel Quinn. Our primary purpose is to help people through the "Now what?" feeling that frequently follows reading Mr. Quinn's work, but any related subject is welcome.

We welcome you, wherever you're from.

Find us on Facebook

Hey Everybody,

Come find the tribe on Facebook. I made a group called "Ishbook" that while doesn't support complex conversations like Ishthink, it can help with the social side of saving the world. It's already been useful as people wonder who is who in the real life, so if you are ready to come out of the tribal closet, Ishbook might be for you. Of course, you have to already have a facebook account... Just search Ishbook on Facebook. You'll find us Wink

The quest for immortality

If one would read Genesis as an allegory, the result would still be the same. Mankind fell under the slavery of the world and because of the curse they will die. Perhaps you think it odd that I say slavery under "the world" and not slavery under "farming". I will try to explain what I mean. The fall of man came as a consequence of man eating from the Tree of knowledge. As some consider this to be entirely allegorical, I think havent reached into the story deep enough. But for the point of the story, what it means is not actually the "knowledge of how to rule" but more than that it is not only the desire to be perfect (wich is vanity) but the true belief in being a perfect creature.

Forest Kindergarden

|

The new forest kindergarten, which opened here in September, is an extreme version of the outdoor learning taught at more than 100 Waldorf schools, all but a handful of them private, scattered throughout the United States. They are based on the teachings of the Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner and emphasize the arts and the natural world, with no formal academic curriculum until first grade.

Forage SF

ForageSF connects Bay Area dwellers with the wild food that is all around them. Through a monthly box of all wild foraged foods, which we call a CSF, we deliver fresh, sustainably harvest wild food to city dwellers. From wild mushrooms to acorn flour, there is a wealth of edible forage just outside our doors that few people know about, and still fewer ever consume.

The Truth about Columbus Day

| | | | |

The "true story about Columbus Day" is that it is the part of our mythological pantheon that allows us to believe that America is something to be 'discovered'. Like success in capitalism, it is part of the American story because it perpetuates the belief that life is discovered, not inherent in you being born. If we told the story that America had always been here, we might get interested in what happened in pre-columbian history. A dangerous time of people living their god-given life, not having their right to life chartered through the church or corporation or other organizational entrapments.

The New Renaissance: Finally a How-To!

| | | | |

When you hear the idea of "The New Renaissance", what do you think of? What are you imagining? When I think about what Daniel Quinn's vision of humanity is, I am often stuck with the concept of what I don't want to be. I think of a tribe of capitalists holding together their capitalist ways on that sliver of land known as Manhattan. I spend time imagining space for other ways of life, but I am somewhat stumped to think of what it might be other than what I've already got to work with.

A Response to: Ask President Obama to Stop Global Warming

Letter from Natural Systems Blog.

Hello Bob... if the goal truly is to pass comprehensive legislation that will stand up to the best scientific evidence and analysis, then it should start with being honest with ourselves. After all, life on Earth and the future of Western industrial civilization is at stake. Although the latter must be seen as much less important than the former.
